Flowery Speech

September? Already?! Summer, please don't leave us! I am a summer-lovin', sun-baskin' girl and I'm just not quite ready to move forward into fall.  This floral outfit epitomizes summer and is deemed irrelevant now that we are moving into fall (even though we Texans will probably experience some steady heat over the next month). I'm not ready for the season to change; I just got comfortable! Isn't that how we respond most of the time to change? "Why can't things just stay as they are?" "He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding" (Daniel 2:21). Sometimes change can appear exciting and other times painful. It's simply a part of life and can't be denied. My mother has a beautiful plaque in their home with the Serenity Prayer which goes like this...

The Serenity Prayer
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
forever and ever in the next. Amen.

Most people know or have heard the first four lines but have never read the full prayer. There is nothing magical about these words, but they are a beautiful reminder that we can have hope and trust in the Lord during times of change. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths" (Proverbs 3:5-6). Instead of having resistance to change, let's pray for God to give us the strength to endure whatever comes our way and remember to keep our eyes on the prize! Life may not always be filled with happiness, but knowing we are not of this world, we can always be filled with joy.

"For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven... a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance... a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace" (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8).
